Spring 2020

Off With Her Head!

In Year 6 this term, we will be learning about The Tudors as a period in British history.  We have begun by looking at what the children already know and what they would like to find out.  We will be moving onto looking at the Tudors place in the chronological history of the UK and finding out about different aspects of Tudor life compared to life now.  We will be learning about the Kings and Queens across the Tudor period and, in particular, Henry VIII, his wives, his character and the changes he made to the church and why.  We will be writing letters in character, composing poetry based on Henry VIII, as well as writing and performing our own plays.  In addition, we will be writing balanced arguments based on whether Henry was justified in executing Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard and also designing a persuasive advert for a new wife for the King!  We will finish off the term with an English unit on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, appropriate to Year 6 obviously!

The children have expressed their interests in finding out about many aspects of Tudor life, including crime and punishment, schooling, jobs and food - time allowing, we will try our best to cover these areas too!

In Science, we are going to be learning about What's Inside The Body!  We will research the function of the major organs within the body and investigate whether certain features like height or gender affect our lung capacity.  In addition, we will learn about the importance of a healthy diet, as well as considering what we as individuals eat and how we might make improvements to our own diets.

In Maths, we will be reinforcing and extending our understanding and application across the full areas of learning, including all 4 number operations, fractions, decimals and percentages, adding and subtracting numbers across zero, shape and space, angles, area, length, weight/mass and capacity, probability, multiples, factors and prime numbers and simple algebra.  All areas will include and encourage us to apply our understanding whenever possible.  We will continue to work on our times tables, as well as our reasoning and problem solving skills.

For our Welsh work this term, we will be concentrating on the past tense.  We will be looking at how verbs are affected when changed into the past tense and we are going to use these in our own writing.  This will be reinforced in our daily Slot Drilio sessions through oral games and activities.

In Art this half term, we are going to be exploring a range of portraits from Tudor times, the use of different media to produce our own portraits and evaluate our own and others' work.

Following half term, in Design and Technology, we will be looking at structures and building our own Tudor houses, ensuring that they are joined effectively and stand as stable structures!

In RE this term, Mr Whitehouse will be teaching us about Justice and Freedom as concepts and what these mean across different faiths.

In PE this term, we will be swimming every Wednesday morning.

Homework!

Homework for Year 6 will continue to be set on a Friday and due in the following Wednesday.  Maths will be set each week alongside a piece of either English, Topic or Science.  Spellings will still be given on a Monday following our 'cold' test and our 'hot' test will continue to take place on a Friday.  Please encourage your children to learn their words using the wide range of strategies that are found in their Spelling folders.
